V8 StockCars at the ARRC

 

When the SCCA’s National Championship event, the Valvoline Runoffs, moved from Road Atlanta to Mid-Ohio in 1994 there was a gap in the track’s schedule that needed to be filled with a major spectator event. Atlanta Region SCCA resurrected an old name, the American Road Race of Champions, and created a “National Championship” event for cars that are not in National classes and therefore cannot compete at the Runoffs. Over the ensuing years the ARRC has indeed become a premier event with an entry of over 300 cars and drivers from all over the eastern United States . And while a preponderance of the cars at the ARRC fall into various Improved Touring classes, the event also features a race for ground-pounding American stock cars that run in the increasingly popular V8 StockCar series. With over 50 entries in 2005, the Big Bore race was one of the best of the weekend. Based on participation so far this year, indications are the entry list will be even longer the weekend of Nov. 9-12, 2006 .

Although all the cars run at the same time, there are four classes in the V8 Stock Car series making up a “race within a race”. The V8GT1 cars are mainly former Trans-Am series vehicles that feature (well) upwards of 600 horsepower, 14” wide racing slicks, big brakes, swoopy bodies and wings instead of the blade spoilers common on most circle-track cars. These tend to be the fastest cars on the track, hitting top speeds of over 170 mph on the mile-long Road Atlanta back straight and turning lap times in the 1 minute, 25 second range. Primarily featuring Corvettes, Camaros and Mustangs (plus the occasional highly-modified Monte Carlo ), the V8GT1 cars are clearly distinguished from the rest of the V8 Stock Car classes.

V8 Stock Car (V8SC), V8 Grand National (V8GN), and V8 Late Model (V8LM) are all very similar to each other in appearance. All feature a purpose-built tube frame chassis, V8 power (naturally), 10”wide steel wheels and circle-track style bodywork. The V8GN cars tend to be former NASCAR series rides with metal bodywork and up to 800 horsepower at the higher end while the V8SC cars have similar engine rules but composite bodies and a lower minimum weight. The best cars in both these classes will still run 170 mph on the back straight, but the more restrictive rules keeps the lap times in the 1:29-1:30 range at Road Atlanta.

The V8LM cars follow the same chassis rules at the V8SC cars, but the engines are limited to around 500hp by more restrictive rules designed to keep costs down. That’s still enough power to get your attention, however, and these cars top out at over 160 mph heading into Turn 10 with lap times around 1:32-1:33 for the fastest cars in the class.

Regardless of your budget and skill limits, any of the cars in the V8 StockCar series possess enough horsepower to get sideways in a hurry and still make a glorious sound to those brought up around American muscle cars. Come on out to Road Atlanta the weekend of November 9-12 to see what road racing is all about. Wander around and check out the various vantage points early in the weekend to find your favorite spot. But make sure you’re at that location with beverage of choice in hand the cooler tops securely fastened when the V8 StockCar group takes to the track on Saturday afternoon. It’ll be a hoot!

Lime Rock Park, August 2006

Lime Rock Park is a true drivers course situated in the rolling his of Connecticut and is subject to many restrictions by the local community. Sound is a big issue there and I quickly became a “notable” driver to the Stewards. My car was putting out 107 dbls and the max was 103. Who told me these cars weren’t that loud? Anyway, I was tormented by the chief of sound the whole weekend. I also sit on the Board of Trustees for NJ with our Chief of Sound and the guy apparently took pleasure in cutting me no slack!

Qualifying was cut to four laps when I was black flagged and told that one more violation and I have to park it. The Steward explained that I should take my qualifying time, hit the paddock and get it quieted down for the race. We had already blown a sound deflector off the car so we set out for a pair of angled pipes. Some Mustang guys helped us out and we were able to weld and fabricate together a respectable set of pipes that aimed at the ground.

We were 10th on the grid of 25 and the plan was to take it easy on the first corner as Big Bend is known for collecting cars on the start. The first few laps were very clean and then our group got held up by a Trans Am car that must have been having motor trouble. I saw several cars tap him accidentally before we got around him. I was careful to lift by the sound truck and did my best to avoid the black flag. Unfortunately the pipes didn’t really do the trick and I saw the first of what I was told would be three black flags – the third being “you’re done”.

Following the first flag my clutch began to have trouble. No smells, she just stopped grabbing. A couple of friend said it sounded like we had about 800 hp on the front straight but it really was the car revving like crazy with little power making it to the wheels. We parked it and ended up next to DFL. The best time was a 1:01 which is only slightly better than what we could do with the ITS car, but LRP felt awfully small with a high HP car. Finishing results were 1) Tavalocci 57.01 2) Matinelli 58.2 3) Scott 58.9 4) Parlato 1.00.4 5) Fernandez 1.00.2

Still getting that clutch figured out as we head to Watkins Glen for the Fun One – this event is one of the best all season and BigSpeed Racing is looking for overall victory!

V8 Stock Car – North Update – Watkins Glen, July 2006

 The conditions for testing at Watkins Glen this July were outstanding and many cars took the opportunity to tune for speed. I had the BigSpeed ASA Monte Carlo fresh from Hamke after a new front clip was installed making the car a true road race setup. After some help from the Dobyns, I had the gearing properly setup for the track and was very pleased with the setup. Handling was excellent and braking was better than expected.

 Qualifying on Saturday was a total washout and only six big bore cars hit the track in a total monsoon. Peter Andrighetti had an altercation and had his GT1 Trans Am car pulled back on a rope (good news was he had her ready for Lime Rock one month later.) I ended up drawing 14th starting position in the middle of the pack.

 The start was clean but I was held up behind an AS Mustang who just parked it in T1. Not wanting to demolish my car again I took it easy and just waited until I was able to clear the slow cars and set sail for the front. The race was a blast as I was able to catch cars with ease, the power of these stock cars combined with the low weight makes them tremendously competitive. We were running SPO and were able to run down everybody to take the lead around lap 4 or 5. I was able to out brake 911 cup cars and one 911 Turbo – that is saying something for these stockers. I settled into a groove and slowly but surely Brian Dobyns in his black ASA car was reeling me in. Finally he caught me in the bus stop and instead of making him grind me for the spot I pointed him by and then made chase for the rest of the race. I was able to hang with him for most of the race but he put about 10 car lengths between us by the time the checker fell.

 Considering this was the first race after a ferocious wreck I was very pleased with the car and the finish. Top five were 1) Dobyns, 2:06.9 2) Phillips 2:07.9 3) Brown 2:09.2 4) Hulse 2:11.0 5) Arey 2:10.9

Watkins Glen Improvements Underway
4/7/2005 - (more pictures) As part of the ongoing capital improvement plan at Watkins Glen International to enhance the experience of fans and prepare for one of their best racing seasons, Watkins Glen International President Craig Rust announced that the capital improvement plans are already underway. Renovations and enhancements will not effect the existing track configuration and are being made to areas surrounding the track such as runoff areas, fencing, and barriers. Renovations will be completed before the start of the 2005 season at The Glen. "This is the second largest renovation project in the 57-year history of Watkins Glen International and a very exciting time for The Glen," stated Rust. "We are committed to the continued success of Watkins Glen International, the Home of American Road Racing, and are getting ready for one of the best seasons in over 20 years." The largest renovation project was in 1971, when the course was rebuilt to the present configuration including the addition of the famous "Boot." The runoff area in Turn 1, also know as "The 90," has been regrated and elevated by approximately four feet and will be paved later this Spring along with Turn 9 (at the exit of the Boot), and Turn 11. Tire barriers have also been replaced throughout the facility, while some existing fencing will be replaced or extended around the Boot and along the front stretch, by Turn 11. New competition curbing will be added to the bottom of the Esses by Turn 2, throughout the Inner Loop, and by Turn 11. In several key areas, such as the Esses, the Boot, and Turn 11, the iconic blue guardrail will be shifted back from the track in order to improve sightlines for the Inaugural Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix, IndyCar Series event September 23-25. The guardrail will not be permanently removed as reported in previous media articles. "While many of these improvements are being made in order to accommodate the faster, lower cars of the IndyCar Series, we have met with all of the series including NASCAR and Grand-Am and have received their input and support," commented Rust. "We are all in full agreement that these improvements will be better for all of the series, teams, and drivers that compete here." In addition, Phase Three of the previously started capital improvement project involving upgrading the restroom facilities and adding a new 42-row high grandstand are also underway. The previous grandstands including the Gray, Green, Yellow and Orange located along front stretch by the start/finish line, have been removed and the area is being prepared for the new aluminum FrontStretch Grandstand structure. Eight events are featured at WGI this year including the highly anticipated NASCAR Nextel Cup Series and the Inaugural IndyCar Series events. This year the NASCAR Busch Series will join the NEXTEL Cup weekend, for the first time at WGI during the annual SIRIUS Satellite Radio at The Glen, August 11-14. Open wheel racing also returns to the famed road course, during the Inaugural Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix presented by Argent Mortgage on September 23-25.

Longs, SC—Over the past 15 years, A.J. Frank has raced in about everything and every series imaginable.

The Bluffton, S.C., driver competed in the WERA Motorcycle Road Racing Series for five years and picked up 30 wins. Frank also spent time in the Russell Racing School/Russell USAC Series, winning nine pole positions in nine race races, finishing third in points, and grabbing four wins. In addition, he competed in SCCA Amateur and Professional Divisions, Touring Division, GT-1 and World Challenge. Over the last few years, the 31-year-old driver competed in NASCAR Late Model Series and Goody’s Dash Series, as well as making sporadic starts in the NASCAR Busch North, Busch Grand National and AutoZone Southeast Series.

But this season, Frank will no longer continue his nomadic career path. He’s found a home. And it’s a good one.

East Coast Motorsports recently announced that Frank will pilot the No. 45 Johnny’s Suzuki/Baird Transport Ford in the Northern Division of the Hooters Pro Cup Series.

"This is a dream come true," said Frank, who brings along sponsors Low Country Customs and American IronHorse Motorcycles to the No. 45. "I couldn’t have asked to be in a better situation."

Indeed.

Frank will be a teammate of defending Pro Cup champion Clay Rogers. And the two will not only share notes, but they’ll share the same shop and crew as well.

"It would have been tough to have us both running in the Southern Division," said Frank. "Troy [Baird, co-owner] and Johnny [Dangerfield, co-owner] decided to have us run in the North. It gives us a chance to keep everybody together. Everybody on the crew is friends, and we’re teammates at the track and away from track."

The collective camaraderie is nothing new for the group, however. Though Frank is the new driver at East Coast Motorsports, he’s not new to the organization.

"I had a chance to spend last year working on Clay’s crew and spotting for him," said Frank. "I got to know them, and they got to know me. Also, I brought a couple of guys with me, and they fit right in with the team."

They also bolstered one of the most prepared teams in Pro Cup.

"When A.J. and his guys came in last year, they really made our team better," said Clay Rogers. "It gave us extra hands to work on the cars, and they’ve all been around racecars for a long time. We used to have one go-to guy on our team. This year, I feel like we can put a wrench in anyone’s hand."

Not only will the powerful pairing help in the shop, but it will allow Rogers to experiment during the regular season at the Northern Division tracks in the Championship Series, gaining valuable data that could prove pivotal during final five races.

"I’m going run a couple of races in the Northern Division," said Rogers. "I’m going to be able to run some experimental setups, because A.J. will be running a setup that’s less aggressive."

Teamed with a championship crew, teammate and car owners, Frank will likely be a favorite in the Northern Division rookie class. But that’s not his lone goal.

"Winning the rookie deal is not my only goal," said Frank. "I feel like we should run up front right from the start of the season. Troy and Johnny don’t hire people that they don’t think can win and I think I can win. I’ve raced against all these guys before. People might think I’m cocky, but I believe I can win the Northern Division title."

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The details of the 2005 Valvoline Cup program will be published on the Valvoline Cup web site at www.ValvolineCup.com by Friday, Feb. 11. As soon as the official rules for 2005 are announced, drivers will be able to begin posting their racing results for this year.

Please read the 2005 rules carefully. Competitors will find that we will have fewer classes this year, although there will still be a class in which everyone can run. Many drivers will have to select their new class if we are unable to make that selection through the information in the database.

Year end awards for 2005 will be announced by the end of April.

You will continue to find the results for 2002, 2003 and 2004 on the Valvoline Cup web site. Awards for the top-30 in each class for the 2004 season will begin going out by the end of February.

Subject: Oval to Road Coarse Conversion

I am writing you to confirm that per our recent discussion that a perimeter chassis oval track car can be converted to perform on a road circuit with relatively few modification and little expense.  We have had a great deal of experience building oval track cars to race on either type of circuit for sanctioning bodies in the U.S., England, Mexico and South Africa.  We also built five ASA cars for Michelin in France that were used extensively on a road course in Dubai.  In the U.S. the cars have been competing in the GT America class since 1997. 
The appeal of the oval track equipment is the balance of performance and cost. At a fraction of the price of the typical sports car, a car built with oval track components clearly offers the most performance and durability for the buck.  Unlike many sports car chassis the oval track chassis has developed as a car that we know will be damaged so it is made to keep repairs uncomplicated and affordable. 
As an example of how affordable it is to road race with an oval track car; you can purchase a good used complete ASA oval track car for $20-30,000 and for under $1,000 you can convert it for road coarse use.  Modifications involve a few simple changes.  A longer left lower control is required to change camber from positive to negative. The sway bar will need different mounting hardware to allow it to operate in both directions.  If the car has cambered axle tubes the left tube will need to be replaced or turned 180 degrees for negative camber.  It is also an advantage to move either or both the oil tank and the battery from the left to the right side of the chassis to decrease left side weight bias.  The balance of the conversion is in set-up that requires resetting camber, weight bias, bump and roll steer.  A rear end oil cooler is recommended and many cars already have these.  A transmission cooler is optional and clutches should be a minimum of 5.5”, three disc.
With these changes you will have a great handling car that is rugged, affordable and fun to drive with safety features that exceed that of the typical road race car.  If you need any further information please let me know.

All of the vinyl wraps are laminated, so it is protected from most car cleaners and waxes. The full-body vinyl wrap can also use florescent and reflective films.

“We can make sure the car is bright and crisp. We can show you exactly what the car will look like before it gets started, too. After the design process is complete, either we can install the wrap or we have an instruction sheet on how to do it yourself. It is pretty easy.”

The wraps can be completed full-graphics scheme for the entire car or can be done with just a partial wrap down the side panels.
